When to call
Call 998 for serious medical emergencies where minutes matter — not for routine GP visits or mild symptoms.
- Chest pain, suspected heart attack, or difficulty breathing that is severe
- Stroke signs: face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech (FAST)
- Loss of consciousness, seizures that do not stop, or severe confusion
- Major bleeding, severe burns, or serious trauma from accidents
- Severe allergic reactions, choking, or poisoning when the person is deteriorating
What to do while on the line
- If the person is not breathing or has no pulse, say so clearly — the dispatcher may guide you while help is on the way.
- Unlock doors if safe, and send someone to meet the crew at the entrance.
- Do not move someone with a suspected spinal injury unless there is immediate danger (e.g. fire).
- Have a list of medications and allergies ready if possible.
What happens next
- →An ambulance crew is dispatched with equipment and medication for stabilisation.
- →You may be taken to the nearest appropriate hospital emergency department.
