When to call
Call 997 as soon as you see fire, smell gas, or need professional rescue — do not try to handle large fires yourself.
- Any uncontrolled fire in a home, office, vehicle, or outdoor area spreading
- Smell of gas (LPG / natural gas), hissing near cylinders, or suspected leak
- Smoke without visible flame, electrical burning smell from panels or walls
- People trapped in lifts, on roofs, or in water where specialist rescue is needed
- Hazardous materials smoke or chemical incidents (stay upwind and evacuate)
What to do while on the line
- Evacuate everyone from the building if safe to do so — do not use lifts.
- If trained, use a fire extinguisher only on a small, contained fire; otherwise leave and close doors behind you.
- For gas: do not switch lights on/off; ventilate if safe; turn off supply at the main valve only if you know how.
- Meet firefighters outside and point them to the exact location and hazards.
What happens next
